Hungarian Revolutionary Posters

Fifty years ago, in spring 1919, the Hun / garian Republic of Councils was constituted in Hungary after the collapse of the Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. The four months of this first attempt of the Hungarian working people to create a socialist state took a very dramatical course, before it was brutally suppressed under the pressure of armed intervention inside and outside the country. Posters, one of the few mass
propaganda media the revolutionary government had at its disposal at that time, reflect very clearly the exciting history of those 133 days.
An essential part of the Hungarian intefligentsia had a strongly anti-militaristic orientation already during the first worid war and therefore it was not surprising that it welcomed the Republic of Councils and put its abiUties at the service of the
revolutionary government. The progressive artists stood — as during all other great revolutionary activities — at the side of social advance and tried to express this point of view in their work systematically, especially in the field of mass propaganda and information. And here the poster took one of the foremost places.
