Throughout the history of the church, the spiritual lives of the Lord's people have been enriched by the special abilities of those who have spoken and written with comprehension and appreciation of the riches of God in Christ Jesus. Some of these were the authors of the meditations that make up this book. Some of their names have been household words for generations.
There can be no doubt that these men and women were gifted beyond the measure of most, since "one star differeth from another star in glory." Yet the heart is quick to sense that what motivated them all was intimacy of communion with Him "whom having not seen, they loved." Their spoken and written words reveal a personal experiencing of God, a reverence and godly fear, a holy wonder, which are rare indeed in this age.
Yet despite their spiritual depth and often majestic phraseology, these daily devotionals are practical por-
