Bővebb ismertető
The preparation of this book was bedevilled by a number of problems, not the least of which were the long distances separating the authors. It was nonetheless possible to meet together on several occasions to reach consensus on controversial topics and to formulate a uniform approach to the book as a whole. If there was one thing that these discussions underlined it was the degree to which our own ideas had been shaped and modified by our immediate associates and by the many investigators from all over the world with whom we have come into contact. In particular we acknowledge with gratitude the debt we owe to the many research fellows who have worked with us down the years. It is these various influences that have led to the generál orientation of this book. Research costs money and the many happy years we have spent working in the field of iron metabolism would not have been possible without the sustained support of a number of bodies. Two of us (T.H.B. and R.W.G.) are deeply indebted to the University of the Witwatersrand and the South African Medical Research Gouncil for jointly setting up and maintaining our Iron and Red Cell Metabolism Research Unit. In addition, we acknowledge the supplementary funding provided by the South African Atomic Energy Board. The remaining twö of us (J.D.C. and C.A.F.) would like to place on record our gratitude to the United States Public Health Service for generous and ongoing support (J.D.C.- AM19011; C.A.F.-HL06242).
