The Authors
Helen Cillman
Helen works as a writer and editor, based in Italy. For many years she worked as a journalist in Australia (her country of birth), before moving to Italy in 1990. Helen has worked on all the previous editions of this book as well as Lonely Planet's Walking in Italy and Rome guides, and wrote the Italy chapter for Mediterranean Europe and Western Europe. On all of these guides she works closely with her husband Stefano.
Stefano Cavedoni
stefano is an actor and writer. In the late 1970s, while still a university student, Stefano's career in the Italian entertainment industry was launched with a bang when his rock band, Skiantos, became a major success. After this he wrote and performed humorous one-man shows. But while on stage he was secretly thinking about travel, forests and mountains. He has worked with Helen on all the previous editions of this guide, researched and wrote many of the walks in Walking in Italy, worked on the update of the Italy chapter for Mediterranean Europe and Western Europe, and wrote the Walks chapter in Lonely Planet's Rome guide.
Damien Simonis
With a degree in languages and several years' reporting and subediting on Australian newspapers (including the Australian and the Age) behind him, Sydney-born Damien left Australia in 1989. He has since lived, worked and travelled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
Since 1992, Lonely Planet has kept him busy writing Jordan & Syria, Egypt & the Sudan, Morocco, North Africa, Italy, Spain, Canary Islands and Barcelona. As well as this edition of Italy, he has written the Venice, Florence and Tuscany guides. At last report he was heading back to Spain, where among other things he is working on Lonely Planet's new guide to Madrid. Damien has also written and snapped for other publications in Australia, the UK and North America. When not on the road, Damien resides in splendid Stoke Newington, deep in the heart of north London.
Sally Webb
Sally Webb was born and brought up in Melbourne, Australia, but has spent many years living in both the UK and Italy and has travelled throughout Europe, the USA and Asia.
In a former life she was an art historian, having studied at Melbourne University and at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, where she graduated in 1990 with an MA in Art History. She moved to Italy in 1994 and became a journalist, editor and travel writer.
