In accordance with the spirit of jazz music, JAZZ FORUM is setting aside a whole page for. musicians to air their views, state their grudges, pay compléments, or what they will-in général, an opportunity for a greatverbal jam session.OPEN LETTER TO JAZZ FANSMany fans complain that musicians do not show enough appréciation for those who faithfully attend the concerts, buy the records and vote in the polls. The cry "if it were not for people like us, you would be at home playing to your four walls" is commonly heard from a fan who has been ignored or snubbed. Perhaps the following will help some fans to better understand the "musicians' side" of this perennial conflict.Jazz has survived because the PLAYERS, the musicians, have been content to play "to the four walls" with little or no thought of pleasing anyone but themselves, for the thrill of experiencing the beauty of création and communication. Of course, acceptance and financial success are hoped for and highly sought-after by most of us. However, artistic pursuit MUST remain independent of such things as monetary-financial success and acceptance. In like manner, appréciation of a person's music should rot (in any way) be affected by a fan's Personal feelings about the performer. This, the task of retaining INTEGRITY, is something which confronts the fan as well as the musician. It is here that the fans can learn from the musicians. Jazz history is replete with accounts of famous off-the-bandstand battles between musicians who were completely happy playing to-gether but were unable to "groove" on a Personal level. Fur-ther, the "Prima Donna" attitude, about which so many fans complain, is often only a "conditioned defense" against ill-timed "onslaughts" of one type or another which can rob a performer of valuable free-time and privacy. Most musicians hold their fans in very high esteem, even while remain-ing "distant". Possibly another encounter, under different circumstances, and the "multi-horned-clam" may prove to be as delicate and approachable as a flower in full bloom in your own garden. Also, fans will do well to keep inmind that much of the music they love is a result of very hard work and intense concentration; jazz musicians (like athletes) expend great amounts of ENERGY while playing. Many times there is "nothing left" not even enough for "sociability". So, do not be too quick to condemn your "idol" maybe he really did "give his ALL" on the band-stand !BOBBY JONES, 8 München 2, Beethovenstrasse 1, West Germany, tel. 5361 20JAZZ FORUM - 3
