It was a heavy period that ensued in the flourishing Apple jazz scene. The moment of notification rivaled the familiar question, "What were you doing when you heard about JFK being shot?" John Coltrane was our leader of the free world in more than one way. Gary Giddins pointed it out so clearly in his "Cadenza" column (September 2002) by referring to "Chasin'the Trane" (Live at the Village Vanguard). This performance was quintessential Trane. Gene Peria via e-mail Stanley Crouch's essay "Coltrane De-railed"reminded me of an anecdote once told to me by baritonist Pepper Adams. During the period discussed in Crouch's essay. Pepper went to the Village Vanguard to hear Coltrane and was disappointed to discover the bandstand teeming with other horn players whose talents ranged from dubious to questionable, effectively burying Coltrane's contributions to his own music.
