Act One
Scene:
Jerusalem's Wailing Wall is visible in the background, with the familiar contours of the square in front. Events take place without breaks, following each other like edited film. Lighting varies for different times.
The din of the department lounge of an airport, with a long row of passengers in the foreground. Jacob, preceded by Esther, is in the queue.
ESTHER (Around thirty years old. She glances before and behind her impatiently and angrily.) I can't believe this is America! We've been kept hanging around here for more than two hours, and moved further backwards than forwards! It's absurd! JACOB (Around thirty-five) My good lady, nothing is as important as security! ESTHER I can't see why Israel is inviting all the world and his wife when it's not even letting people get on the plane! JACOB Please forgive us, madam
ESTHER And I loathe Kennedy Airport. It's utterly unable to function efficiently. Last time we were kept for two hours on the runway in order to travel to Boston in forty minutes. I thought that was the limit. Well, it evidently wasn't! JACOB But my dear lady, four thousand years of history
may surely be entitled to a little ESTHER I presume you aren't intimating that Moses was
kept waiting this long on the Egyptian border! JACOB A little longer, in fact, and with good reason ESTHER Well, Moses was travelling of his own volition; I have no choice. And if I'm being invited then the very least they might do is ahh!
