Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism

Instructions to Authors
Scope. The Journal is devoted to the publication of origi-
nal manuscripts, i.e., those that have not been published
previously, except in abstract form, on experimental,
theoretical, and clinical aspects of brain circulation and
metabolism. Two types of papers are considered for pub-
lication: (a) full papers written in the style outlined below,
and (b) short communications reporting concise pieces of
work that lead to positive conclusions. Short communi-
cations should not normally exceed 1500 words and
should not contain more than 2 figures.
Address for Contributors. Send manuscripts to A. Mur-
ray Harper, M.D., Wellcome Surgical Institute, Univer-
sity of Glasgow, Garscube Estate, Bearsden Road,
Bearsden, Glasgow G61 1QH, Scotland; telephone (041)
942-2248.
Form of Manuscripts.
(a) Submit manuscript in triplicate, typewritten with
double spacing throughout and with margins at least 2.5
cm wide. (Only the original manuscript and all sets of
figures will be returned if a paper submitted for publica-
tion is rejected. The photocopies will be destroyed. Any
author who wishes all copies of his or her paper returned
in the event of rejection should indicate this when first
submitting the manuscript.)
(b) Each manuscript must have a title page which in-
cludes only the title, authors' names, laboratory of origin,
name, address, and telephone number of the person to
whom proofs and reprint requests should be addressed,
and any necessary footnotes. Indicate specific affiliations
of each author. Information concerning sources of finan-
cial support should be placed in an Acknowledgment sec-
tion, between Discussion and References.
(c) The page following the title page should include a
brief abstract of up to 200 words (100 for short communi-
cations), up to six key words or terms, and a running title
not exceeding 45 letters and spaces.
(d) Papers should be organized in the standard fashion,
i.e., introduction giving the reasons for the investigation,
methods, results, and discussion. Headings of sections
may be omitted in short communications.
(e) In mathematical copy, be precise about alignment
of numerals, letters, and symbols; hand-letter any that
cannot be typewritten. Make a circled notation in the
nearest margin to identify any possibly ambiguous
character such as 1 (one or el), 0 (zero or oh), X (multipli-
cations sign or ex), Greek letters, script letters, diacritical
marks, and prime, and certain letters (e.g., C, K, P) in
which capitals and lower case are nearly indistinguishable
when handwritten. Use the simplest form of equation that
can be made by ordinary mathematical calculation; for
instance:
Results should be expressed in absolute terms, e.g., Ci,
dps, dpm.
(h) For tracer kinetic terminology, please use
guidelines as described in Brownell et al. (1968),
"Nomenclature for tracer kinetics," Int J Appl Radiat
I sot 19:249-262.
(i) Drug names should be the official or approved
names; trade names or common names may be given in
parentheses where the drug is first mentioned.
Tables and Figures.
(a) Tables and figures should be so constructed that
they, together with their captions and legends, will be
intelligible with minimal reference to the text.
(b) Each table should be on a separate page at the end
of the manuscript.
(c) Each figure must be accompanied by an explana-
tory legend typewritten with double spacing. Do not use a
separate sheet for each legend. Explain all symbols used
in the figure.
(d) The units of measure must be indicated clearly in
the column headings of a table or the coordinates of a
figure. If the unit of measure is the same for all the data in
a table, it may be given in the table title or in a footnote to
be printed immediately below the table.
(e) Data should be presented as clearly defined mean
values with some measure of their dispersion (standard
deviation, range) and an appropriate indication of the
statistical significance of differences from control values.
The number of individual values represented by a mean
should be indicated.
(f) Line drawings should be submitted as at least two
sets of clear glossy prints, with lettering of high standard
and large enough to be legible when reduced. Halftone
photographs should be submitted in triplicate in the form
of original photographic prints; photocopies are often in-
adequate for proper editorial evaluation and cause delay
in editorial handling. An overlay should be provided
showing which area of the photograph requires greatest
definition, and scale bars should be provided on the
photograph. The Publisher guarantees to reproduce
photomicrographs to the satisfaction of the author.
The maximum final size of any figure in the printed
journal will be 17 by 23 cm (7 by 9lA> inches). On the back
of each figure give the figure number and authors' names
and indicate the top of the figure with an arrow. Color
illustrations will be charged to the author; the cost will be
given upon request.
(g) Symbols on graphs, etc., should be inserted by the
author using the following standard characters:
O • A A ? ¦ x +
