Optical Reflection Constants and the Electromotive Condition of Chromium. August L. Bernoulli {Glimi. Centr., 1904, ii, 1371 ; from Physikal. Zeit., 5, 632—634).—An optical examination of chromium which had been rendered passive by exposure to air or by a boiling solution of jo-benzoquinone in benzene has been made by Micheli's method (Abstr., 1901, ii, 82). The results showed that the metal was coated with a superficial layer. The composition of this layer is, according to the author, 20303,CrOg. The maximum change of E.M.F. against an electrode of platinum in a solution of ammonium nitrate was found to be 0'35 volt. When the metal is made passive by the action of nitric acid, the alteration of E.M.F. is much greater and may reach 0'9 volt. Oxygen and nitric oxide are both absorbed by chromium, and the metal, which had been treated with nitric acid and thoroughly washed, was found to liberate a measurable quantity of nitric oxide when allowed to remain in water for several hours; active chromium does not yield this gas under similar conditions.
