Seeing Things
Julia's birthday, and they were on the train from Berkeley headed for the Oakland Mole where the ferry came that would take them across the bay to San Francisco to meet Uncle Hugh at the Green Door. It was terribly expensive to have lunch there. They never went, she and Mama and Greg, except when Uncle Hugh, who was rich, took them on special occasions like birthdays, or Easter, or the first Sunday after the last day of school.
Julia sat by the train window making up conversations while the Southern Pacific slid through the outskirts of Oakland toward Shellmound Park with rich, heavy clicks of its wheels as it rolled over the track joints.
