To a peculiar degree, these anthologies are the result of happy collaborations: with pupils in Coventry, York and Nebraska, who have read poems with, to, for and at me; with helpful friends and colleagues in school, university and elsewhere - Brian Rees-Williams, Alf Colley and Jack Trevena in York; Wilfred Jackson and Tom Haggitt in Coventry and Birmingham; Frances Reinehr, Dolores Mather and Paul Olson in Nebraska; Peter Searby in Cambridge; Carl Barth in New York; Ron Lundeberg in San Francisco; Christine Vincent, Pat Farrington, Sue Hogg and Jonathan Croall in West Drayton; above all, indefatigably and generously, Martin Lightfoot, whose tireless interest and cooperation have been such that his name should alsó be on the title-page. My biggest regret is that the volumes do not contain a generous measure of the poetry of Ian Hamilton Finlay, whose oeuvre I uncovered too late. I'd like to dedicate these volumes to Clare, Matthew and James; and to Catherine, who shared the delight and the chores.
