Keep Fit in Grammar [antikvár]

Aims and target groups Keep Fit in Grammar is a book of grammar exercises for intermediate students of English; the book can be used either as course material in class or for revision purposes. The material covers all basic English grammar and concentrates especially on those areas that Germán learners tend to find difficult. The contents of Keep Fit in Grammar are based on Learning English - Grundgrammatik - Ausgabe für Gymnasien (IClettbuch 51151) and its English equivalent A guide to Grammar (IClettbuch 51153), but the exercises can alsó be used with any other grammar or any other course materials. The exercises are on the whole straightforward and lend themselves to quick and efficient revision of specific areas of English grammar. While the easier exercises might be satisfactorily dealt with even in the 3rd or 4th year of English, the more demanding ones can offer a challenge even to "Grund-" or "Leistungskurs" students. At the back of the book there is a short list of grammatical structures that Germán students very often find particularly difficult to use correctly. This list is by no means comprehensive but simply highlights a few 'tricky points'. Chapter and section headings are identical with those of the Grundgrammatik so that students and teachers can easily compare the exercises with the corresponding rules and examples. Apart from the references to the Grundgrammatik (GG 20 = Grundgrammatik § 20), there are alsó references to the Grammatik des heutigen Englisch (Klettbuch 5057) or its English equivalent A Grammar of Present-Day English (IClettbuch 5058) for a more in-depth analysis of structural phenomena. The vocabulary used in the book is based on Learning English - Green Line, and any words that an intermediate student of English is not likely to be familiar with have been explained. Types of exercises The exercises vary in length, difficulty and complexity, with the first exercise(s) in each separate section normally being quite easy, while the exercises towards the end of chapters tend to be more demanding. Each chapter alsó contains a number of translation exercises. These exercises present an efficient way of checking and revising differences between Germán and English usage. How to use the book Obviously, it is not necessary to work through the material in the order in which it appears. It may be advisible to start off with the section or sections in the Grundgrammatik that students are interested in or want to revise, reading the examples and the rules carefully. Then the corresponding exercise(s) could be done and the answers checked with the teacher or the Key (IClettbuch 50622). And then, in order to uderstand what went wrong, the Grundgrammatik should be consulted again.
