To the student If you are learning English in a berufsbildende Schule you will almost certainly already know somé English. This book has been prepared with your needs in mind. You don't want to start at the beginning again, but you may have forgottén quite a lot of what you learnt. So the first part of KEEP GOING concentrates on revising the English you have already learnt without going into as much detail as would be necessary if you were learning it for the first time. Probably you are alsó already thinking a lot about your future career. You may fancy a career in commerce or you may be more technically inclined. But you are certainly thinking about these things. KEEP GOING touches on the world of work and the problems of finding a job without going into them in too much detail. But KEEP GOING does not only deal with the world of work. You will alsó find in it plenty of discussion about hobbies and things that interest you, such as learning to drive a car or do-it-yourself. But the most important thing to learn is how to communicate in English. In order to do this you must not only know the structures of English but you must alsó be able to use them in the right situations. The reason why we talk about 'giving directions' and not just the Imperative' or 'offering' and not just 'shall, can, may' is because we want you to think about the situations where you need to use a particular structure. You should learn to use it in the right moment. We hope that you will find something to interest you in this book and that you will learn to think of English not only as a subject that you have to learn in school but alsó as a language which will enable you to communicate with people from other nations. Fürden Lernenden Wenn Sie an einer berufsbildenden Schule Englisch lernen, werden Sie mit Sicherheit bereits über gewisse Englischkenntnisse verfügen. Das wurde bei der Planung dieses Buches beson-ders berücksichtigt. Sie wollen nicht noch einmal von vorn anfangen, doch habén Sie anderer-seits viel von dem, was Sie einmal gelernt habén, wieder vergessen. Deshalb konzentriert sich der erste Band von KEEP GOING auf die Wiederholung bereits durchgenommener Sprach-strukturen des Englischen, ohne so sehr ins einzelne zu -gehen, wie es im Anfangsunterricht nötig wáre. Vielleicht habén Sie auch schon berufliche Pláne, denken möglicherweise an einen Beruf im Handel oder sind mehr technisch interessiert. Über all das machen Sie sich bestimmt Gedanken. KEEP GOING behandelt die Arbeitswelt und Probleme der Berufsfindung, ohne allerdings ins Detail zu gehen. Aber KEEP GOING bescháftigt sich nicht nur mit der Welt der Arbeit. Es enthált auch eine Füllé von Anregungen, sich mit Hobbies oder anderen interessan-ten Dingen auseinanderzusetzen, z.B. wie man 'Autofahren lernt oder ein Bücherregal anbringt (do-it-yourself). Oberstes Lernziel ist jedoch, sich auf englisch verstándigen zu können. Um das zu erreichen, müssen Sie nicht nur die Sprachstrukturen des Englischen lernen, sondern sie auch in der rich-tigen Situation anwenden können. Die Angaben 'giving directions' und nicht einfach impera-tive' oder 'offers' und nicht einfach 'shall, can, may' sollen Sie auf Situationen aufmerksam machen, in denen eine bestimmte Struktur gebraucht wird. Sie sollten lernen, sie im richtigen Augenblick anzuwenden. Wir hoffen, daft Sie in diesem Buch manches für Sie Interessante fin-den und daft Sie das Englische bald nicht nur als ein mit Lernen verbundenes Schulfach betrachten werden, sondern auch als eine Sprache, die Sie zur Kommunikation mit Menschen anderer Nationen befáhigt.
