INTRODUCTION This book contains seven tests which have been written specificaUy for students using the Kernel Lessons Intermediate book. Everyone, whatever he may do, wants to know from time to time how he is getting on. A clerk in a bank wants to know if he is doing his job properly, arid is very pleased when the manager compliments him on his work. The same with other people in other jobs and with people learning how to do something. We all like to have a sense of achievement, a feeling that we have achieved or done something well, and that we have not been wasting our time. In language learning this is very important indeed. As a student, you need to know frequently how much you have really learned and what you should perhaps still revise before going on to a new Unit or part of a course. Very often, there are things to be learned in one part of a course which are necessary to the learning of something later in the course. It is therefore important that you reaíly learn and know how to use the first thing so that you can go on to learn something more difficult. The tests in this book are designed for three purposes: a)The Entry Test (page 2) is designed to teli both you and the teacher whether you are ready to begin using Kernel Lessons Intermediate. In somé cases it will be necessary for you to revise somé of the simple things you learned in a beginners' course so that when you start Unit 1, you can immediately begin to practise the English in it. There is no thing worse than trying to struggle through a language course book which is really too difficult for you and from which you learn very little because of the diffículties you have. b)The Progress Tests (pages 6,10,16, 22,28) are designed to test how much you have learned of a certain amount of material in the book. There are fíye of them, each one testing a knowledge of five Units of the book. So Progress Test 1 tests your knowledge of the English you have learned and practised in Units 1 to 5; Progress Test 2, your knowledge of the English you have learned in Units 6 to 10; and so on. Unlike the Entry Test, which is a multiple choice test, the Progress Tests consist of a variety of Sections using different techniques and for which you have to write one or two-word answers or even whole sentences. Wherever possible we have tried to use those sorts of exercise which you have become familiar with in your learning from the book.- f . c)The Exit Test (page 33) is very much like the five Progress Tests in that it is a test in which you write out answers and not simply cross what you think is a correct answer (as in the Entry Test). It is different from the Progress Tests, however (i) in that it is designed to test your knowledge and control of the English you have learned right through the book from the first to the last Unit; and (ii) it is a longer test which is divided into two parts. Part I looks just like the five Progress Tests in formát; Part II is a test in which you must write a letter. Always remember to read the instructions at the beginning of each test and the instructions and examples to each Section of a test very carefully. It is important that you understand exactly what you have to do; and if you don't understand what you have to do, ask the teacher. Remember that a test is not designed to show how little you have learned, but how much you have learned.
