Foreword During the past decade, it has become increasingly evident that L-carnitine is intimately involved in many different aspects of medicine. The precise nature of this involvement is the subject of ongoing investigation being conducted in clinics and laboratories worldwide. The purpose of this book is to provide for the clinician an introductory overview of the role of carnitine in medicine as it is understood today. Any advances in our understanding to be made in the future might then be better placed in context. The book is divided into three sections. After a generál introduction to the basic aspects of carnitine metabolism, the involvement of carnitine in the clinical aspects of paediatric medicine and aduit medicine are discussed. Each section is preceded by an overview of the ensuing chapters on selected topics. The editors wish to acknowledge and thank the individual authors for their time and effort and Sigma Tau for their continuing support. R Ferrari S DiMauro G Sherwood
