PREFACEThis volume, in which a précis of literary history and an anthology are combined, gives a survey of English literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the dawn of the twentieth century. It is specially intended for the pupils of the upper classes of French secondary schools and contains many of the texts prescribed for them by the regulations of June 3rd 1925.Believing that a book of this kind ought to bring into strong relief the figures of the real poets or prose-writers rather than accumulate data on a host of minor authors, I have devoted much space to the " masters of English Literature in particular to Shakespeare. I have quoted in full several classics of English poetry, e. g. VAllegro and II Penseroso hy Milton, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Coleridge, The Lotos Eaters and Ulysseshy Tennyson. Of a few important plays I have given not isolated pages, but entire scenes linked with one another by brief analyses.Due acknowledgement has in every case been made of the permission granted by either authors, trustees or publishers to make use of copyright matter.I desire to express my gratitude to my friend Mr. D. L. Savory, Professor at the University of Belfast, for reading the proofs and making valuable suggestions.Georges Guibillon.
