Lady Windermere's Fan
Between the years 1777 and 1892 the English stage had suifered from a serious shortage of wit. The success of the first production of Lady Windermere's Fan showed that a new comedy to rival School for Scandai had at last been written.
The paradoxes of this play, its gaiety, and its dramatic theme of a woman's honour in danger, belong, like the paradoxical figure of Wilde himself, to the nineties, but its sparklingly witty assault on the préjudices and hypocrisies of his âge have ensured the play's survival and continued success with modem audiences.
