Introduction COMPONENTS LANGUAGE: STRUCTURE AND USE, grades 7-12 continues and completes LANGUAGE: SK1LLS AND USE. grades R-6. Components of the 7-12 program are as follows: Test and Practiee Masters Cumulative Record Card In addition there is one Language Handbook which can be used in grades 10-12. The material in this handbook is contained in the student book for grade 12. Books 7 and 8 open with a warm-up review section followed by eight units on grammar, usage. mechanics. and vocabulary. A second warm-up review section precedes the remaining four units on sentences. paragraphs, expressive writing, and reports. Each book contains two Handbooks: one covering studying. taking tests, listening, and speaking. and the other defining terms and providing extra practice. Books 9. 10. and 11 open with four units on grammar. usage, mechanics, and vocabulary and semantics. followed bv four composition units that include material on sentences, paragraphs, exposition, editing and revising, and on writing reports, papers based on research, business letters, and so on. Book 11 alsó contains material on applying for a job or to college, a section on taking tests, and a diagraming supplement. Book 12 follows the plan of books 9-11 except that exercises only are provided in the grammar. usage, mechanics, and vocabulary and semantics units. explanatory material for these exercises being contained in the extensive Language Handbook in the back of the book. Unit 5 is on taking tests, and the concluding unit 6 consists of numerous varied suggestions for compositions, with many models. and an in-depth treatment of the longer research paper. For convenient reference all 9- 12 books contain handbooks of standard usage forms, definitions, spelling rules, letter forms. and so on. A comprehensive style guide for research papers is included in the Language Handbook for book 12. With minor exceptions, the footnote and bibliography style presented in LANGUAGE: STRUCTURE AND USE is in conformity with that recommended by the Modern Language Association. The Language Handbook permits considerable flexibility in the program. It can be used for tenth-. eleventh-. or twelfth-grade classes that need only a reference guide instead of a complete student book. Or. in many situations, book 12 can be moved to grade 11, reserving the Language Handbook for grade 12.
