FOREWORD - I have named this book Last Night ori Earth after a solo dance work of mine in which, through movement and text, I perform a number of voices that I have lived with ali rny life. Though this book relies on storytelling and strives to be a personal historical document, events are reported as I lived them and now, sometimes many years later, remember them. During my performance of Last Night on Earth, I contradict myself, remember the past, and project the future at will. In this "performance in text," I intend to do the same. That this book carne to be is stili somewhat of a mystery to me. It cer-tainly would not have happened without Peggy Gillespie. In the summer of 1992, she approached me about the possibility of writing an article on me, or including me in a book she was writing about creativity. In order to gain more insight, Peggy participated in a three-week dance residency workshop conducted by my company at Skidmore College. Evenings, we engaged in relaxed, tape-recorded conversations. From this experience, Peggy shaped an article for the Boston Globe Magagne. When transcripts of our conversations reached the desk of editor Jenna Laslocky, she suggested that I author my own book. Recognizing our temperamental compatibility, Peggy and I continued the interview process to generate the book's substance. We reworked this spoken material sometimes extensively, sometimes hardly at aliinto text. I thank Peggy for her skillful interviewing and her sensitive and thoughtful manipulation of the transcripts and I acknowledge Jenna's enthusiasm and devotion to the material, her masterful blend of focused passion and tactful prodding.I also thank Bjorn Amelan, my companion, who taught himself to type,
