Antonio Vivaldi — The Four Seasons. Vivaldi, Die 4 Jahreszeiten. Op. 8. No. 1-4 This edition has been compiled from the two 18th century printed editions extant (no autograph having yet been found) now in the possession of the Library of Congress in Washington. The two 18th century editions were printed by Le Cene in Amsterdam and Le Clerc in Paris arOund 1730. These concerti are the first four of Op. 8 entitled "II Cimento dell'Armenia e deirinventione". Each concerto is based on a descriptive sonnet, printed in its entirety at the beginning of the Le Cene edition, and repeated line for line over the actual solo and orchestral parts when applicable. The letters in this score are not rehearsal letters (although they can be used as such) but refer to the lines of the poem, the same letters appearing before those lines in the complete printed sonnet. From the dedication to Count Venceslao Marzin it is clear that these 4 works have been performed by Marzin's orchestra and that Vivaldi had added the sonnets to the printed edition later in order better to explain his intentions. In this present edition all additions are in parentheses. These additions consist purely of dynamics where missing uniformity of phrasing where ambiguous, and occasional indications of accidentals where omitted. The Continuo part has been realized separately and is meant to serve only as a suggestion, leaving any^ further embellishment to the more experienced player. Throughout Vivaldi's marks are carefully preserved. Note particularly in the last concerto "L'Inverno" the difference of the mark meaning staccato and . meaning a long note. Ornaments in the two early editions where different have been made to Da bisher kein Autograph der Partitur gefunden wurde, so ist diese Neuausgabe aus den 2 vorhandenen Ausgaben des 18. Gedichts, indem dieselben Buchstaben vor den betr. Zeilen des vollständigen Sonnets erscheinen. Aus der Widmung an Graf Venceslao Marzin geht hervor, dass diese Werke von Marzins Orchester aufgeführt wurden, und dass Vivald\ die Sonnette später der gedruckten Ausgabe beigefügt hat, um seine Absichten klar zu machen. In der vorliegenden Ausgabe stehen alle Hinzufügungen in Klammer. Sie bestehen nur aus dynamischen Zeichen, soweit fehlend, Vereinheitlichung der Phrasierung, soweit zweideutig und gelegentlicher Angabe von Vorzeichen, soweit sie ausgelassen sind. Die Continuo-Stimme ist separat ausgesetzt und ist nur als ein Vorschlag gedacht, während dem erfahrenen Spieler eine weitergehende Verzierung überlassen
