He may be young or old and haue undergone different trials. In one respect, however, he is one and the same person-he is someone who is defying Fate. We shall fírst meet out hero as a child who is only beginning to realize that Nature has grudged him somé of her bounties, and part with him when he is in the declining years of his life, a time for summing up and deciding lahether one has done what one has set out to do. This book is about those who are usually called handicapped people, Somé of them are congenitally so, others are victims of accidents, and still others are disabled war veterans. These people are waging a day-to-day struggle with difficulties that are nnknown to a healthy person. What is their life üke? Is it martyrdom or misery? Many of them are convinced it is normál in all respects. They have no inferiority complex, are confident of themselves and do not feel isolated from society. At any rate they say so and I have no reason to doubt their sincerity. They are real people and with their permission I shall use their real names in this book.
