PREFACE
The János Bolyai Mathematical Society hosted a Colloquium on Universal Algebra in Szeged from 26 to 30 August, 1983. This was part of the series of conferences on various topics in algebra organized annually, since 1971, at the József Attila University.
Nearly 90 participants from 13 countries gathered at the meeting. The scientific programme consisted of plenary lectures of six invited speakers: B. A. Davey (Australia), J. Jezek (Czechoslovakia), R. McKenzie (U.S.A.),
G. F. McNulty (U.S.A.),
L. A. Skornjakov (Soviet Union),
H. Werner (Federal Republic of Germany),
over 40 short talks in two sections, and a Problem Session, the latter held at its traditional place: in the Botanical Garden of the University.
This volume contains 34 papers, most of which are written versions of talks delivered at the Colloquiiam. Several papers were also accepted from authors who, for some reason or other, could-not give a talk or could not attend the conference. The papers cover a wide range of topics. A number of them are concerned with various problems on varieties and other classes of algebras, with categorical aspects of varieties including duality theory. Others deal with the structure of finite algebras, with clones and relations on finite (or in some cases infinite) sets, and related questions. In a few papers several other topics, for instance representation
