FOREWORDWith the exception of certain historical personages, all the characters in this book are wholly fictitious and bear no resemblance to any persons living or dead. A similar statement might be made in regard to many of the places described in these pages; for the Central Highlands are no longer isolated from the world of tourism and industry. A gothic villain could not pursue the heroin far without being run down by a truck, or tripped up by a pack of officious Boy Scouts. I feel no need to apologize for this minor departure from vulgar reality in a tale, and a literary form, which is inherently fantastic. Nor, I feel sure, need I apologize to Scottish readers for an occasional note of levity. Contrary to the opinion of the ignorant, no one has a finer sense of himior than a Scot; and I should know, because I am a quarter Scot myself.
