INTRODUCTIONThe basic principies of socialist democracy werë elaborated by the founders of scientific communism, Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, and form a part of the theory of the socialist state.Lenin defended Marxism from attacks by ene-mies of the working class, and further developed it on the basis of revolutionary practice. The foun-der of a new state system, Lenin personally guided the building of socialist democracy in Soviet Russia.Today the principies of socialist democracy are carried out in the Soviet Union and other socialist countries. Their experience in establishing and de-veloping socialist democracy is of value to the international working-class and communist movement, and their achievements in this field are an important factor in the development of the world revolutionary process. "A living example," Lenin said, "tackling the job somewhere in one country is more effective than any proclamations and conferences; this is what inspires the working people in all countries." ** V.
