Ill PREFACE The overture "Leonore" No. 3 constitutes a revised version of the "Leonore" No.2. It was composed by Beethoven for the second version of his opera which had its first performance In Vienna on May 29, 1806. (The original version had been rather unsuccessful! in the same city a few months previously.) The third definite version of the opera, entitled "Fidelio", appeared in 1814, and the overture which Beethoven composed for this version is generally referred to as No. 4. It is in E major, and is the one most frequently used for present-day productions of the opera. The overture No. 3, the most important of the four, is generally considered almost too gigantic in proportion and conception to be suitable for stage purposes; it is, however, one of the most widely played concert pieces in all musical literature.
