CHAPTER
jhe cops were waiting for him when he got home from work. One of them was a uniformed Chicago policeman, assigned to the housing project. The other was a white man everybody called "tiie junkie.** He went around in dirty and torn clothes and without a shave, trying to look like a junkie. He didn't fool anybody. Everyone knew he was a plainclothes cop.
They were waiting for him in the corridor. The uniformed cop was standing by the door to the fire stairs, holding his nightstick in his hands, and the junkie was leaning against the wall.
LeRoy knew they were waiting for him the moment he passed the junkie. The junkie pushed himself ofiE the wall and started after LeRoy. The uniformed cop stepped into the middle of the corridor.
