SPECIAL NOTES TO THE TEACHER The three types of exercises used in this book are clearly marked, so that they can be readily identified. Oral exercises are marked with this symbol, and it is suggested that the teacher ask the students to keep their books closed while an oral exercise is being drilled in class. In oral exercises the teacher gives the cue and the response is given either by the class or by an individual student, on the basis of the teacher's cue. Of course, the teacher is free to drill class with the books open, even when exercises are marked as oral, in those cases where in his judgment this will make learning easier and more efficient. Visual exercises are marked with this symbol,. Students need to have their books open for visual exercises. In visual exercises the cue is given by the teacher, by the class, or by a student, and the response is given by an individual student or by the whole class. These exercises are marked as visual because the students need to look at their books in order to formulate the cue and/or their response. Written exercises are specified as such in the instructions. They are alsó marked with the visual symbol, %. Obviously, the students must have their books open when they do them. The student is given a visual cue, which he reads silently, and then formulates the response before he writes it. Written exercises can be done in class or can be assigned for homework. It is important for the student not to complete the exercise merely by filling out the blanks on the page of his book, but to write out the whole exercise in his notebook Written exercises either are ordinary drills or, quite often, aim at testing the student. It is important for the teacher to read thoroughly the Teacher's Guide that accompanies the Intermediate Course of the Lefs Learn English series, before he starts teaching this book. It is alsó recommended that the teacher follow the suggestions that are given there, so that optimál results can be achieved in the classroom.
