INTRODUCTIONWell, congratulations ! You've chosen one of the oldest and most respected ways of learning a foreign language in all of Europe. ASS I Ml L has been, in fact, for the past fifty years synonymous with painless language study. You'll find that about 99 % of the French population, for example, can recite the first line of ASSIMIL's first English book :" My tailor Is rich".Since those early days, methods have been constantly improved and brought up to date, but the basic principles remain the same.First, and most obviously, the primary goal of learning a language is being able to speak this new language. And so, in this series, you'll find a set ot realistic spoken dialogues. In French, much more so than in English, this is of the utmost importance, because there are in fact two French languages : a spoken one and a written one. From the painful experiences of so many Americans who are able to read French without being able to speak or understand it, we felt the need for a new, vital and living self-teacher. You'll find that, as for vocabulary, there is relatively little (compared to English) to learn : the essential thing is being able to use it in real situations - hence the ASSIMIL dialogues.Secondly, the ASSIM IL method has consisted from time immemorial of two parts : a passive stage and an active one. In exactly the same way as infants learn to talk their parents' language, you will passively learn and read (and if possible listen to the recordings) ; in short, you will ASSIM I Late French right up to the end of this book. Then, and only then, will you start into the active phase (just like the baby who has finally stored up enough material to begin to talk). And in this second, vastly more important phase, you will be called upon to dig up and use this stored-up knowledge to start talking. This is the so-called deuxieme vague (second round) which we'll ask you to ignore patiently until the end of Book One.
