Preface This book is intended to be used as a source of supplementary language practice matéria! both in the language classroom and fór the priváté student. Letters are used as a means of presenting in a realistic médium somé of the activities and interests of the young British student. Each of the letters is designed to convey a certain amount of information which, it is hoped, the student of the book may be able to contrast or compare with that appropriate to the situation in his own country. At a formai level, a reply to each letter can be written, making use of somé of the structures and vocabulary items practised in the exploitation section of each chapter. The exploitation matéria! is in the form of explanatory notes, exercises and driIIs designed to help the student to overcome somé of the problems which are frequently encountered at the intermediate level. To this end, most of the letters concentrate on a specific grammatical theme. At the same time, the student, intending visitor to Bournemouth or nőt, will gain knowledge of the seaside town of Bournemouth where many thousands of students have learnt to speak English at one of the several language schools fór which Bournemouth is well-known both in Britain and abroad. The Street plán at the back of the book will nőt only give the student an opportunity to become acquainted with a reál town, bút alsó provides extra language practice in asking the way and understanding as well as giving Street directions.
