English Translations BY HENRY S. DRINKER 1. At the Window (Op. 105, No. 3) (Seidl) Ye garden walls so still and cool, Enclosing friendly cheer. On whom the silver moon looks down. So far and yet so near, You saw me once with heavy heart, My head on weary hand, Alone and brooding, mute, apart, With none to understand, But now another light has dawned, My day of sadness past. And faithful friends are ev'rywhere Along my path at last. No chance can rob me now of them No sorrow, no despair; I keep them deep within my soul, No harm can reach them there. Ye garden walls, you think me sad, But this is silent joy; The moonlight fills my heart with peace That nothing can destroy! Thru ev'ry window looking out, A friendly face I see, A friend whom I will never doubt, A friendly face I see, That smiles and thinks of me. 2. Longing (Op. 105, No. 4) (Seidl) The wind is raw, the night is cold. The sky is clear, the stars are gold. I sit here in my little room. And watch the stars and fret and fume. For something lacks, 'tis plain and clear; 'Tis you, my love, 'tis you, my dear. When I would see the stars aglow. My eyes fill up and overflow, With tears of love they overflow. Ah why are you away so far, My brightest star, my fairest star? You know I love and need you so. My tears are here to let you know. I fume and fret the whole day long, But can not write a worthwhile song. Because a worthy song must grow Unprompted as the breezes blow. As fresh and free as westwinds blow. By thought of you my soul is stirred! Here comes the song, yes, every word! With you away, when all is wrong, At least I am allowed a song. 3. In the Open (Op. 80, No. 3) (Seidl) Standing in the boundless night. Yearning fills my breast, Starry splendor gleaming bright. Gives my heart no rest, Countless arms with welcome dear Sweetly beckon me. Countless voices call me here: "Greetings, love, to Thee",! I know also, know it well. Know what calls me there. Like a friendly ringing bell. 278
