David Skipper was born in 1962 and grew up on a
housing estate in the heart of industrial Teesside. He
says of Life on the Line, "I grew up around a railway
and so a lot of the events and places in the book are
real, including Twenty-one Arches and Suicide Leap.
Unfortunately the Arches has now been demolished
because it was considered a danger to adventurous
children. I still live close to the line and can hear the
sound of the trains in the night." An avid film fan,

David started at sixteen to write screenplays and short
stories and to make his own Super 8 movies before he
had his first novel, Runners, published in 1987. He
lives in Cleveland, where, since leaving school, he has
worked as a laboratory technician.
