PREFACE
This volume contains the papers presented at the "Colloquium on Limit Theorems of Probability Theory and Statistics" organized by the Bolyai János Mathematical Society and held in Keszthely from 24 to 29 June, 1974.
Choosing only a special area of Probability and Statistics, we intended to bring together mathematicians who are really interested in, and appreciate and understand the problems of each other. It is, however, quite difficult to define the bounderies of this topic. Indeed, in a sense, it covers nearly all the Theory of Probability and Statistics. In order to illustrate what we had in mind when talking about limit theorems, the following special sessions were organized:
Invariance principle
Limit properties of order statistics
Limit theorems on stochastic approximation
Limit theorems of independent random variables and martingales
Limit theorems for dependent random variables
Limit theorems of abstract valued random variables
We tried to find speakers in only these subjects and, to a large extent, we have succeeded in doing so. However, a separate session was organized to accomodate a number of speakers whose talks, though strictly related to limit theorems, could not be classified under any of the above sections.
As a result of the relatively restricted nature of the Colloquium, there was an excellent scientific and personal contact throughout, and many new friendships were established in these days. The importance of these new contacts is underlined by the fact that of the 78 attendants of the Colloquium 33 came from abroad, representing 13 different countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgary, Canada, Denmark, GBR, Great Britain, Japan, The Netherlands, Poland, Sovietunion, Sweden, USA.
