IntroductionIn this new edition, the twenty-five original tests have beensupplemented to meet the demands of the Cambridge First Certificate(formerly Lower Certificate) Listening Comprehension Test. Theonly question now set by Cambridge for the exam consists of fivecomprehension questions on each of four passages that are read tothe candidate twice. The other question types on the previous formof the Test have been dropped from the exam. However, as theyproved so popular and useful for testing differentiation betweenEnglish sounds, and for stress and intonation, they have beenretained here.The questions on passages 1-25 are still relevant for the exam,and additional passages (Nos. 26-37) that ask the five compre-hension questions only, now follow these. The other question types,which for teaching purposes have been retained, still have generalrelevance for the 'Interview' but more specifically the teacher isrecommended to use 'First Certificate Interviews' in conjunction withthis book since it provides material directly based on these newdemands by Cambridge.The present book continues to aim at providing useful practicematerial for exam candidates as well as for all students of Englishat, or coming up to, an intermediate stage.Using the testsInstructions to the teacher are given with the first five tests, and applyto all the tests. The first test is provided with instructions to thestudents. These instructions also appear in the Students' Book andare to be read out by the teacher to confirm that they are understood.These instructions apply to all the tests.It is suggested that it should first be explained to the studentsthat each test has six* parts; that the first five parts have up to fivequestions each; that the sixth part is a short passage that will be readto them three times in the early passages but twice only later on, andthat the number of questions will vary, five only being required for theactual exam.It should also be explained to the students that all the questionsare in a multiple-choice form.It is essential that the teacher should have read through thestudent part of the test before reading the questions. In Questions 3and 5, which require a particular intonation, the correct answerfrom the students' paper has been given in brackets as a reminder.The teacher should of course be familiar with the other answerson the students' paper.
