Introduction
This is the second cardiovascular conference to be held in Snowmass-at-Aspen, the purpose of which was to make an in depth assessement of what has happened to patients who have undergone cardiac valve replacement. What are the iatrogenic problems and how may they be detected and potentially fatal ones avoided? When should a valve be replaced? What is the basic survival of patients who have undergone valve replacement? It was hoped that by such a long term follow-up, a more realistic picture of the current status of valve replacement would be gained, thus resulting in a better aquaintance of all with the prognosis and the problems of management in such patients. The help and advice of Doctors S. Gilbert Blount Jr. and Bruce C.Paton in developing this conference is greatfully acknowledged.
I am particularly indebted to Mrs. Virginia Brace for her help in the preparations and arrangements of this conference as well as in editing the manuscripts, to Mrs. Jean Robinson for assistance in coordinating this conference and to Miss Mary Ann McInerny and Mr. William Nelligan of the American College of Cardiology, who helped make this meeting possible.
Appreciation is expressed to the Regional Medical Program in Denver Colorado, The Santa Barbara Heart and Lung Institute, Santa Barbara, California, Cutter Laboratories, Berkeley, California, Edwards Laboratories, Santa Ana, California, Shiley Laboratories, Inc., Santa Ana, California, Surgitool, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Travenol Laboratories, Inc., Morton Grove, Illinois for educational grants which supported, in part, this program.
