ntroductionThis Combined Key contains detailed answers and tapescripts for both Longman First Certificate Practice Exams and Longman First Certificate Second Book of Practice Exams. It also contains notes on administration and scoring schemes for both books. The Longman First Certificate Practice Exams and Second Book of Practice Exams books each contain four complete Exams. Each Exam is equivalent to a full Cambridge First Certificate examination in level, form and length. (See the Longman First Certificate Coursebook for a description of the examination Papers.)The Exams can be used as either1further classroom (or homework) practice material in preparation for the F.C.E. towards the end of or on completion of the course; or2material to be administered as 'mock' practice examinations on completion of the course, and marked accordingly. If set as 'mock' examination Papers, it is important that they be administered and timed as near to examination conditions as possible so that prospective candidates become accustomed to the idea of having to complete Papers within the set time allowed.iMPOkTANx: In many parts of the Practice Exams, the sample of language on which Papers are based is that taught in the Coursebook. If they are marked as 'mock' examinations, therefore, while success may give an indication of high achievement in the course, such results should not be taken to be an indication of the same degree of success in the F.C.E. proper.Any attempt to assess or forecast individual students' possible success (or failure) in the F.C.E. examination from results in these Exams should be made with extreme caution.Coverage and times allowedEach Exam contains the following:Time allowed in minutes Reading Comprehension60Composition90Use of English120Listening Comprehension(?) 30Paper 1 Paper 2 Paper 3 Paper 4Total:(5 hours) mPaper 5 (the Oral Interview) is treated separately under general method of administration.General method of administrationPapers 1,2 and 3 (Reading Comprehension, Composition and Use of English) should be administered in the same way as all the end-of-Unit tests in the Coursebook. As throughout the course, students should be advised again to read all instructions carefully, read items or texts through completely before answering questions, write clearly and make sure that they complete the Paper in the time given. For each 'text' in Paper 4 Listening Comprehension, the following procedure is recommended:1Ask the students to look at the Listening Comprehension part of the Exam. Explain the instructions carefully, pointing out that there are three 'texts' which they have to listen to and then answer questions in various ways. Sometimes they have to fill in blanks, sometimes they have to choose the correct answer in multiple-choice items, sometimes they will have to tick whether statements are True or False.2Before reading (or playing the recording of) the first text, give students a minute in which to study the items, incomplete form, or whatever.3After the minute, tell the students that you are going to read (or play) the text straight through. During this first hstening, they can begin to answer the questions.4After the first reading or recording, give them another minute in which to check what they have done.5Then read (or play) the text for a second time, so that they can finish answering the questions or check what they did when they listened the firstIMPORTANT NOTES1 The Cassettes to accompany the Practice Exams and Second Book of Practice Exams contain recordings of all Listening Comprehension Paper 4 material. They include all repetitions, so that if you use the recordings in 'mock' examinations, you will not need to run a cassette back. Please note that when you hear a bleep, this indicates where you will need to pause the tape to give students time to read the questions. All you need to do for a Listening Comprehension Paper is to instruct students to turn to the relevant pages in the Practice Exams or Second Book of Practice Exams books; to make sure they have pens or pencils and paper; to read the instructions (for the Paper) with them; to switch on the cassette-player at the beginning of the recording for that Paper and to let it run, except for pausing it when you hear a bleep.
