Introduction Scotland may be divided into three areas, namely the Lowlands, the Highlands and the Islands; the line across the mainland which separates the Lowlands from the Highlands runs very approximately from the north-east to the south-west of the country. At first encounter the name Xowland' may prove rather puzzling, for Scotland is, with few exceptions, generally hilly and even mountainous. The Lowlands are, however, usually rather lower and less grandly mountainous than the Highlands, and Man's influence on the Lowland scene is far more noticeable, for here are situated most of Scotland's largest towns and cities. Nevertheless, within a short distance of such úrban areas is much magnificent countryside, among which is the romantic Borderland, immortalised by Sir Walter Scott. The Highlands are interesting mainly for the grandeur and wildness of their unspoilt scenery, and alsó as the lands to which the Gaelic-speaking Celts retreated in times long past, leaving the Lowlands to the largely non-Celtic population. In the Highlands the Gaelic language may still be heard, and at Highland Gatherings the tartans and kilts, the Highland games and dancing, and the skirling of the pipes makes a lasting impression on the visitor. The Scottish Islands, lying apart from the rest of the country, are enchanting and to visit somé of them seems like stepping back into another century. Visitors are rarely disappointed and are usually drawn back again and again. Au premier abord, le nom de Lowlands peut étonner: l'Ecosse est en effet, á de rares exceptions prés, un pays de collines et de montagnes. L'expression basses-terres n'est qu'une comparaison avec le reste du pays; le relief des Lowlands est, en régle générale, plus doux que celui des Highlands. C'est aussi dans cette région que l'influenee de la civilisation industrielle se fait le plus sentir: c'est lá que sont situées les plus grandes villes (comme Glasgow et Edinburgh). Cependant, des que l'on quitte ces grands centres on se trouve dans de magnifiques paysages, immortalisés par Sir Walter Scott. Les Highlands, quant á elles, sont remarquables pour leurs paysages grandioses et sauvages. Elles sont aussi les gardiennes des coutumes les plus anciennes. Ce sont les régions traditionnellement occupées par les populations celtes et la langue gaélique y est encore parlée. Les grandes manifestations annuelles ont lieu en costume traditionnel, au son des cornemuses. Quant aux iles, leurs paysages enchanteurs donnent au visiteur l'impression de remonter le temps. Que les touristes se rendent en Ecosse á la recherche de la nature ou de son passé mouvementé ou bien qu'ils s'y rendent pour pratiquer le golf, la peche ou les sports d'hiver, ils sont rarement dégus et ne demandent qu'á y revenir. Einleitung Schottland kann man in drei Gegenden einteilen: das Tiefland, das Hochland und die Inseln. Die Bezeichnung Tiefland für eine überwiegend hügelige Landschaft mutet anfangs seltsam an, doch verglichen mit dem Hochland ist sie fiacher und weniger gebirgig. Der menschliche EinfluB auf das Tiefland ist unverkennbar. Hier befinden sich die meisten von Schottlands groBen Stádten, aber nicht weit ab auch die herrlichsten Landschaften. Eine davon ist das romantische Borderland, das Sir Walter Scott in seiner Dichtung besungen und unsterblich gemacht hat. Das Hochland ist für die groBartige und wilde Dramatik seiner unberührten Landschaft berühmt. Hierher zogen sich vor langer Zeit die gálisch sprechenden Kelten zurück und überlieBen das Tiefland der überwiegend nicht keltischen Bevölkerung. Im Hochland kann der Besucher noch gálisch sprechen hören, und die Tartanmuster und Kilts bei den Hochlandspielen, die Tánze und das Pfeifen des Dudelsacks werden ihm unvergeBlich in Erinnerung bleiben. Die schottischen Inseln, fern vom Festland, sind bezaubernd und der Urlauber fühlt sich hier in ein anderes Jahrhundert zurückversetzt, wo die Zeit still stand. Ob auf der Suche nach landschaftlicher Schönheit und Ruhe, oder ob aus Interesse an einer reichen, bewegten geschichtlichen Vergangenheit, ob um Golf zu spielen, zu angeln oder schizulaufen, der Urlauber wird von seinem Besuch kaum enttáuscht sein und immer wieder hierher zurückkehren wollen.
