Preface
As in previous editions, we have designed Looking in Classrooms to help teachers, principals, and supervisors observe and describe classroom behavior. We also provide strategies teachers can use to enhance the interest, learning, and social development of their students.
Teachers are often not aware of much of their classroom behavior, and consequently may act in inappropriate or self-defeating ways. We describe a variety of techniques teachers can use to increase their awareness. When they become cognizant of what happens in the classroom and can accurately monitor their own behavior (or be assisted to do so by other teachers, the principal, or a supervisor), they can more easily achieve their instructional and personal goals.
We also present important knowledge, concepts, and research findings that teachers can use to improve instruction. In particular, recent research provides compelling evidence that teachers' behavior significantly affects students' attitudes and achievement. In this edition we present up-to-date reviews of research on teacher expectations, teacher modeling, classroom organization and management, student motivation, and classroom instruction.
