PREFACE
These Lost Lectures are for the most part talks delivered to imaginary audiences. Three of them were papers read to the Newman Society at Oxford, and one of them (that on Gilbert and Sullivan) was a real lecture delivered in London. This Lecture, as well as the paper on Punch and Judy, has already appeared in the book called Punch and Judy, and both are reprinted here by permission of Messrs. Heinemann. A shortened version of the paper on Oxford and Cambridge has appeared in The New Keepsake, and the paper on Eton in the London Mercury. I take this opportunity of thanking the editors and proprietors who have kindly allowed me to reprint them here. With the above exceptions all the lectures are new and have neither been delivered nor published.
My thanks are due to Mr. Edward Marsh for reading the proofs.
