806 april ii, 1962 Machinery volume ioo Abstracts of Principal Articles Making Super-accurate Gyroscopes P. 808 This article which is the first of a series concerned with the activities of the Instrument Wing of English . Electric Aviation, Ltd., Guided Weapons Division, makes reference to the new factory recently occupied at Stevenage, Herts., and the types of gyroscopes and accelerometers produced there. Components for these instruments, such as rotor and stator laminations, of intricate form, are frequently required, initially, in very small quantities, for experimental and testing purposes. Dies for many such components are produced by means of a casting technique. The punch, or a piece of mild steel temporarily attached thereto and finished to the same form, is placed in a ring mould which is then filled with molten zinc alloy. After solidification and cooling, the punch is removed and the edges of the cast die aperture are lightly peened inwards. The punch and die are then set up in a press and the punch is pushed through the aperture, to shear the sides to an accurate fit. A die of this type can be put into production within about three hours of completing the punch. Some information on tolerances, thickness limitations and steel inserts is included. Herbert Hydraulic Copying Attachments P. 816 Two sizes of hydraulic copying attachments have recently been made available for capstan and combination turret lathes in the range built by Alfred Herbert, Ltd., Coventry. Each attachment can be mounted at different angles on the rear of the cross-slide, and is supplied with a number of quick-change toolholders. For copy turning, the template is attached to a carrier which is mounted in guideways at the rear of the cross-slide, and is connected to the headstock by a roller guide bracket. When copy facing and machining internal profiles with the larger attachment, the template is mounted on another holder which is attached to one of the faces on the turret. A number of Herbert capstan and combination turret lathes, fitted with hydraulic copying attachments, has been put into operation by Aveling-Barford, Ltd., for profile machining components for earth-moving equipment and some set-ups are described. Special-purpose Machines for Heating-element and Connector Production P. 822 Burco, Ltd., Burnley, Lanes., employ a number of special-purpose machines of their own design and construction to facilitate the quantity-production of many items incorporated in their range of domestic appliances. In this article is described a machine for winding mica heating elements which is provided with a magazine feed arrangement for the blanks. The elements are produced in a continuous line" end-for-end, and there is a guillotine which automatically severs the winding, and separates the leading element, as it approaches the discharge point. Another special machine provides for securing thé elements in small sub-assemblies, also for conducting an electrical test, and this machine incorporates a " memory " system which facifitates the subsequent rectification of faulty elements. Finally, details are given of a special machine for forming wire connectors from stiff copper wire. (Machinery, 100— 11/4/62.) Frederick Pollard & Co., Ltd., Corona Works, Leicester P. 827 Frederick Pollard founded the company that bears his name in 1912, and exhibited a range of drilling machines at the first machine tool exhibition held at Olympia that year. The company has always specialized in drilling machines, and more recently has introduced unit heads, which are employed in special-purpose and transfer machines of Pollard design. Frederick Pollard died in 1941, but three of his sons and two grandsons are on the board. Drilling machines now built by the company cover a wide range, and include vertical, radial and multi-spindle types, and a considerable amount of special equipment is supplied, particularly to the motor vehicle industry. A Fixture for Welding Thin Steel Sheet by the Gas-shielded Metallic-arc Process P. 837 To take full advantage of the high speed with which thin sheet steel parts can be welded by the gas-shielded metallic-arc process it is essential to employ fixtures which provide adequate support, to prevent distortion, and can be loaded and unloaded quickly and easily. Invariably, large numbers of compensating finger-type clamps are required, and this article describes a method whereby such clamps can be appfied and released quickly. Use is made of what is termed fire-fighter pressure flex, which is a type of hose that can be inflated by air but resumes a " flattened " cross-section immediately the pressure is released. The hose can be laid in suitable channels, conforming to the contours of the work, and is used to operate various types of rocker clamps. (MACfflNERY, 100—11/4/62.) Payment will be made for exclusive contributions. april ii, 1962 Machinery volume ioo 807 EDITORIAL Developments in Precision Forging The advantages of producing many components by a precision forming process whereby metal is caused to flow, under pressure, to the required finished shape, or to a close approximation of that shape, are now widely appreciated. The amount of machining required can often be greatly reduced where such a technique is adopted, and there may then be a substantial saving of material that would otlierwise be reduced to swarf. In some instances, indeed, machining may be virtually eliminated witli correspondingly increased economies. Moreover, quite apart from the overall savings in manufactm'-ing costs that can often be achieved in this manner, it is frequently possible to ensure an improved product when tlie desired form is obtained mainly by plastic deformation, with tlie minimum of subsequent metal removal by a machining process. Where extensive cold-working is involved, for instance, the physical properties of the material may be considerably improved, with the result that it may be possible to employ less expensive stock of comparatively low tensile strength, and still obtain a finished product with the specified characteristics. At the same time, as is well known, where the finished form is obtained wholly or mainly by deformation, the grain formation is usually more favourable and added strength is thus ensured. Examples of these effects are afforded by rolled screw threads and forged crankshafts. In recent years, the great advances that have been made in connection with cold forging processes, and the amount of publicity that this subject has received, have tended to divert attention from the possibiKties of precision hot forging.
