Thirty years ago this month, the Hungárián people, in the face of impossible military odds, rose up in righteous anger against the brutal suppression of their humán rights. Fighting virtually barehanded against guns and tanks, they paid a bloody price for their noble and courageous bid for freedom from tyranny. Bővebb ismertető
In Budapest alone, more than 25,000 "Freedom Fighters" lost their lives in the sacrificial bloodbath, while the Free World looked on in horror, wrung its hands in anguish, and beat its breast in indignation. . .but did nothing. It is said that "nothing is deader than yesterday's news". But, in the hearts and minds of Hungarians in the United States, Canada, and elsewhere around the Free World, what happened in Hungary thirty years ago this month is not - and never will be - forgottén. The Hungárián communities in the United States and Canada, for example, are remembering "OCTOBER 1956" with special commemorative programs and services. It is fitting, therefore, for us, too, to dedicate this October issue in commemoration of the "Hungárián Revolution of 1956". But, while most of the commemorative activities being sponsored by Hungárián churches, clubs, and organizations are centered upon the cause of the effect, we decided to mark this tragic episode in the history of the Hungárián people by recalling how the thousands of Hungárián "Freedom Fighters" and refugees were welcomed and helped to resettle here in the United States. Thirty years after their arrival here under the auspices of the U.S. Government and various religio-charitable organizations (such as, for example, the National Catholic Welfare Conference), most of the more than 40,000 Hungárián refugees processed through Camp Kiimer, New Jersey, have become responsible American citizens, property owners, and taxpayers. A vitai segment within the mainstream of American society, they have worked hard to become successful in industry, commerce, and the professions. Today, their American-born children are attaining even greater success in all fields of humán endeavor, while their grandchildren are being trained and educated for the future in technical schools, colleges, and universities. The "Hungárián Refugees of 1956" have repaid America tenfold for the warm welcome and generous assistance they received thirty years ago! PAUL PULITZER Executive Editor
