IntroductoinIntroductionWlien Gustav Mahler passed away in 1911, classical music recordings had only recently been introduced. Never could he have imagined that one day tliere would be thousands of recordings of his music.The growth in recordings of Mahler's works has been explosive. In 1985 there were already 619 recordings in existence. Ten years later, that number had grown to 1,168, and as reported in this volume, today there are 2,774 (including 110 DVDs and laser disks). I have personally observed this growth: when I recorded Mahler's Second Symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1987, it became the 51" recording to be made of that work. Today there are 159.A significant development in recent years has been the release of an unusual number of arrangements often of just parts of the symphonies. For example, in just the First Symphony, there are 60 recordings which feature such diverse arrangements as four hands piano, for synthesizer, for wind orchestra, for a trumpet, organ, clarinet and cello ensemble, and even for klezmer ensemble.
