Foreword
Everyday Listening and Speaking
Language skills rarely exist in isolation. We often write in reaction to something we have read, just as we often comment on what we have heard on the radio or seen on the television. The skills of listening and speaking are probably the ones given most prominence in the modern language classroom as they are the skills of everyday interaction and, as such, they are completely interdependent. When ordering a meal, booking a hotel room, or looking for somewhere to live, it is not enough for language users to know what they themselves want to say. They must react to the situation and to the language they are confronted with, and then amend their response accordingly.
Class time provides the opportunity to rehearse how the foreign language is used in the real world. This book develops the two skills of listening and speaking in a highly systematic and practical manner. The authors have carefully selected a range of situations that visitors to an English-speaking country could well find themselves in. The better these can be practised in advance, the more successful the learners' actual performance will be.
Students' interest will be engaged by the practicality of the topics. We feel sure they will find the tasks relevant, challenging, and enjoyable. New language is presented and contextualized, and known language is developed via the extensive practice activities.
Teachers of lower levels are constantly looking out for ways of engaging their students in fluent conversation; interesting listening material based on everyday situations is also much appreciated. This book provides both. Teachers can select a topic which is appropriate to their class, and they will be able to rely on the material to provide a thorough, balanced lesson or series of lessons.
