Preface
In 1967, while writing the "Pari Informatique",* it ap-peared to me to be useful to present to the vast audienceof computer system users, the essential elements which make up a company's data processing system or systems on the one hand, and on the other hand an overview of the possibte development of management information systems and the oonsequences of their evolution.
Today, such a book would have lost much of its interest. The unrelenting advances made in data processing, and the associated difficulties are part of our desire for an advanced scientific society; the generál public is perfectly well in-formed of important technological advances, not only through speciálist revues but via the popular press, and the economists predict that before the end of the century the information processing sector will represent for the in-dustrial nations, in terms of both numbers of jobs and re-venue, the second largest industrial sector after that of building and construction but ahead of the automobilé industry.
As far as the technical aspects of information processing and computerisation are concerned, it is true that they have become increasingly diversified and complex, but today's data processing technology, its environment and technical personnel can equally be said to be mature.
