Rachel stared down at the red roses. Once again, she read the simple white card with its simple message: 'Marry me.' She sighed as she looked around the beautiful suite at the Hacienda Inn. The Santa Fe resort for those who val-ued pampering and privacy resembled paradise, but it didn't feel heavenly. It was full of her uncertainty, despite its understated luxury, the Navajo rugs and the antique four-poster bed.
Had it been a good idea to come here the day after Christmas for a spa retreat? It was another thing Rachel couldn't decide. She looked at her watch. It was almost time for dinner, the last meal with fat, cholesterol and alcohol that she could eat for five days. She'd better enjoy it, if she could rediscover a world in which genuine enjoy-ment was possible.
She walked to the glass doors that led to the terrace. Pulling them back, a wall of cold air hit her. The desert could fool you. The sunset had looked as warm and invit-ing as the late afternoon.
