With the publication of this guide booklet, the Provincial Tourist Agency of Matera would like to offer to Italian and foreign visitors a way of interpreting and understanding one of the most interesting parts of Basilicata and a geographical region of Southern Italy still unknown to the greater part of the tourists. The photographs and the tourist itineraries suggested here enable the tourist to choose from a wide variety of ways of travelling about and getting from the lovely forests in the mountainous area near Matera to the beautiful beaches on the Ionian coast. Matera and the towns in its province make up a territory open to discovery that never ceases to surprise all those who wish to find in the peace and beauty of nature an oasis of tranquility and relaxation. The hospitality of the people, as well as the preservation of folk traditions, the typical cooking of Lucania and the artistic handicrafts all blend into the varied landscape with its characteristic mediterranean climate. Finally, in the museums and areas of archaelogical excavations, one can see the traces and monuments of the ancient peoples that, in the course of history, chose the same places which have remained untouched in the province of Matera.
