PREFACE The matroid theory colloquium was held in Szeged, Hungary, between August 29 and September 4, 1982. The Organizing Committee consisted oL L. Lovász (chairman), A. Recski and Z. Szabó (secretaries), G. Czfedli, A. Frank, A. Huhn, G. Katona, L. Megyesi and G. Túrán. Among the large number of international combinatorial colloquia, organized in Hungary by the János Bolyai Mathematical Society, this was the first one devoted entirely to matroid theory. Tutorial series on regular matroids and matroid minors (P. Seymour), on oriented matroids (J. Edmonds and M. LasVergnas), on matroid oracles (B. Korte), on engineering applications of matroids (H. Crapo and M. Iri) and a large number of invited and contributed talks gave an up to date picture of this rapidly developing branch of discrete mathematics. Special attention was paid to the applications of matroids, which are becoming more and more important in many areas. The present volume contains most of the talks of the colloquium. All the tutorial, invited and contributed talks are arranged alphabetically by the authors. Every paper was refereed. We would like to express our thanks to every participant of the colloquium for their contributions to its success. We are particularly indebted to Z. Szab6 for the local organization, to J.
