MATURITAS THE EUROPEAN MENOPAUSE JOURNAL Maturitas 35 (2000) ix ¦ www.elsevier.com/locate/maturitas EDITORIAL Dear Colleagues, dear friends, We are proud to be able to offer you the abstract volume as a supplement to the new official Journal of the European Menopause and Andropause Society (EMAS), Maturitas, a classical and renowned Journal. The 5th European Congress on Menopause and Andropause assembles the best European specialists in the field of Menopause to present a new and attractive scientific and educational program. We would like to thank the authors for submitting so many well balanced lectures and interesting free communications. All abstracts of our scientific activities are collected in the present volume. EMAS has been founded to promote the study of all aspects of the climacteric in both men and women, to organize, prepare and participate in international meetings and congresses on subjects related to Menopause and Andropause and to advance the interchange of research and experience between individual members of the society. The statutes of the EMAS have been submitted to and accepted by the Swiss Authorities. EMAS has been recognized as an International Scientific Society by the Swiss Government and accepted by the International Menopause Society as the official European Régiónál Menopause Society. The EMAS has several scientific Task Forces. One of them is consecrated to primary and secondary cardiovascular prevention, another to epidemiology and cancer. The aim of our Educational Task Force is to guarantee the same standard of education and information in the field of Menopause all over Europe. We count on your active collaboration. You are cordially invited to jóin our Society, which is based on three principals: 1. It is open for individual membership (full members). 2. It is open to National Menopause Societies, grouped in a Council of National Societies. 3. It is open to Institutional members, grouped in a separate Council. It is our intention to include the annual fee for Maturitas in the membership fee of our Society so that all members are in touch with the basic and clinical research in our field. Maturitas offers to the EMAS in each issue the space necessary to keep you well informed about the activities of our Society and to list all congresses and other activities going on in the field of Menopause and Andropause. I ara looking forward to receiving your confirmed or new membership to the EMAS and Maturitas.
