Foreword In 1990 the most unusual international meeting was organized by French cancer research experts in Reims. They collected researchers from all over the world, who were interested in the analysis of the role of metál ions related to environmental factors associated with the health of all living creatures, and especially with humán health. It was clear that most likely it was the first time in the history of medical congresses that not only medical doctors, but all kinds of scientists came together to declare their vitally important observations related to humán wellbeing. The global environment is changing day by day and unfortunatelly marked deteriorations have been observed affecting all living creatures, including humans. This meeting is a contribution to the rapidly expanding research field of the associations of global environmental factors and humán health prevention and preservation. The aim of the meeting is to promote interdisciplinary discussions, international scientific collaborations and to build up new personal contacts between researchers. Life sciences have numerous applications to the resolution of health issues and global public health, which explains the interest of a wide rangé of authors participating in this meeting. Colleagues coming from 39 different countries represent all five continents. The scientific program is composed of short courses, plenary sessions, lectures, poster sessions and includes topics of analytical methods, carcinogenesis, cancer therapy, diseases connected with metál ion effects, nutrition, toxicology, ecological studies, environmental and occupational diseases, oncology, aspects of selenium and aging. We believe that the 8th International Symposium on Metál Ions in Biology and Medicine scientific program will provide you with a high quality of research in metál ions and trace elements. Finally we are grateful to the members of the international and local organizing committees for their valuable advice and suggestions, and also to all the authors for their efforts and willingness to discuss their scientific work and finally to all the contributors and exhibitors for their support. We would also like to express our appreciation to Philippe Collery (Service de Cancérologie Polyclinique Maymard, Bastia, Francé), Marié Vescovali Pohn Libbey, Eurotext) and especially to Professor Etienne (Central University Hospitál, Reims, Francé) for their tireless efforts and dedication to this conference and the successful publication of this book.
