A WORD FROM THE AUTHORMickey, Taggy, Puppo, and Cica Discover Toronto is a sequel to the travel series for children I began 25 years ago. Although Toronto had by then become a tourist destination, there had been no children's literature available about the city either for the tourist to buy as souvenirs or preparatory reading, or for local children to leam about their home city. The first volume on Toronto became successful in bringing children to the city, children who previously were reluctant to join their parents on their travels from Sudbury, from Chicago, from Germany. As children consider dogs and cats their closest friends, they are able to identify with my protagonists, who are real creatures, living in Toronto. The introductory chapter of each book and the organization of each trip always takes place in Toronto. The chapters each cover a daily excursion or activities in the city or country in question. As parents often gratefully acknowledge, children always want to discover the exact places to which M.T.P.C. went and they want to eat the same food, mostly in the same restaurants that they visited. The volumes followed each other in sequence. Toronto was first, because the animals live here; then Ottawa, because it is the capital; Montreal, because the Olympic Games took place there at the time of writing; then Kingston because of a family home in the Thousand Islands; Budapest, because I was bom there; Vienna because my husband was bom there; the Netherlands, because Toronto and Amsterdam are twin cities; then Switzerland, because we attended many surgical conferences there; France because we lived there for two years. This volume was awarded the Prix St. Exupery from the city of Paris because it demonstrates friendship, loyalty and equality. The adventure in Italy was written in honour of the 500th anniversary of the landing in America by Columbus, who was bom in ItalyTheir visit to Greece was not only their interest in the country, but it followed an invitation to take part in the Olympic Games. I have included a few remarks by children and reviewers about the books to underline the reason I continue to write about "The Adventures of M.T.RC."
