Welcome to the Microsoft Office for Windows 95 Resource Kit
The Microsoft Office for Windows 95 Resource Kit is written for administrators and MIS professionals. It provides the information required for rolling out, supporting, and understanding Microsoft® Office for Windows® 95. This book is being published both in bound form and on CD, and it is posted in the Microsoft Office Resource Kit forum on the Microsoft Network (MSN). For late-breaking, up-to-date information about Office for Windows 95, MSN is the place to look. MSN has a forum for each of the Office applications, and one for Office for Windows 95, too. For information about accessing MSN, see Appendix F, "Resources."
In the past three to five years, much has changed in terms of how an MIS department treats desktop applications. Five years ago, departmental LANs were sprouting up all over organizations. Individual departments, and even individual users, were deciding which applications they would use. In choosing an application, their primary criterion was the set of tasks the application could do. Today, however, departments are increasingly interested in how well an application allows people within a workgroup to share data.
Two factors have contributed to this change. First, the use of LANs and WANs is much more widespread, and MIS departments are now managing them centrally rather than departmentally. Second, in the autumn of 1993, Microsoft Office 4.0 was launched. Office 4.0 provided much more consistency and ease of use than has been available before in a group of integrated desktop applications. This spurred many organizations to standardize on Office. In standardizing on a single, integrated solution, MIS organizations appreciate the control they have over their departmental desktops, yet they also recognize the importance of supporting and maintaining this software to reap the benefits that standardization provides.
The purpose of this Resource Kit is to provide the information that the MIS professional or administrator needs to support Microsoft Office for Windows 95. This includes planning for deployment of Office for Windows 95, deciding which configurations are best for your organization, and understanding issues regarding migrating from earlier versions of Office or from competitive applications.
